Advantages of Smart Deposit

See the portfolio composition

The Smart Deposit portfolio is comprised of four money market ETFs. The majority is allocated in funds tracking the overnight depoist interest rate set by the central bank. The rest is made up of European government and corporate bonds with investment credit rating, which means there is only a minimal probability of the bond's emminent not paying back the promised money. The money market is a part of the financial market where securities with maturity up to one year are traded. Considering the short-term character of these tools, their risk and value fluctuations are mostly very low. The money market is considered the safest part of the financial market. Would you like to dive deeper into the dephts of the Smart Deposit?

For whom is Smart Deposit suitable?

Due to low risk, this product is suitable for anyone wanting to earn returns exceeding bank interest on short-term savings. We can open accounts for both individuals and legal entities (for legal entities, a minimum deposit of 50,000 euros is required).

Smart Deposit may pose as an alternative to traditional savings and term accounts. If you wanted to achieve the annual yield of Smart Deposit in a bank, you'd need to lock in the money for at least a year. At Finax, however, you may achieve it with complete and practically immediate access to your money.

Regarding financial goals, it is suitable for targets that are within a year's reach, e.g. a vacation, Christmas or paying taxes. Furthermore, it is suitable for people who are more risk-averse and who do not wish to see value fluctuations with their money.

How does a change in interest rates affect Smart Deposit?

The return of the Smart Deposit is linked to the interest rates set by the European Central Bank (ECB). When the ECB changes interest rates, the return of the Smart Deposit adjusts almost immediately.

The Smart Deposit's yield is paid out practically on a daily basis. If the ECB raises interest rates, the investors in Smart Deposit will profit. On the contrary, if the interest rates drop, the yield decreases almost immediately.

Minimum height of the investment and setting the investment length
The minimum height of investment in this product is €50 000. Clients who have been with us for at least five years may invest as low as €10 000.

Finax offers two products for short-term investing: Smart Deposit and Wallet. However, their composition slightly differs, resulting in somewhat different risks of value fluctuations and expected returns.

Both Smart Deposit and Wallet consist of short-term bonds and instruments tracking short-term interest rates set by the central bank. However, unlike Smart Deposit, Wallet contains bonds with slightly longer maturities.

Therefore, the value of savings in Wallet will fluctuate a bit more than in Smart Deposit. In exchange, it should generally offer higher returns during most periods.

Smart Deposit is more suitable if you need your savings within one year (e.g., for a vacation or tax payment) or if you do not want to see any value fluctuations. On the other hand, if you will need your savings in 1 to 3 years (e.g., for a car replacement or major home renovation) and are willing to accept some value fluctuation in exchange for higher returns, you should choose Wallet.

We have also written a separate blog on this topic. Read it for more information about the differences between these products and examples of situations where they are appropriate.

Is Smart Deposit as safe as a bank deposit?

The greatest risk for the Smart Deposit product is so-called interest rate risk. If the European Central Bank lowers interest rates, investors’ returns would decrease. Clients are informed by email about any changes in rates and Smart Deposit returns.

Risk of not having your savings paid out in case of a bankruptcy is as low as at a bank. All your funds at Finax are protected up to €50 000 by the Investment Guarantee Fund, and at a bank up to €100 000 by the Deposit Protection Fund. Furthermore, Finax is mandated by law to separate your assets from the assets of the company, while in case of a bank deposit, the money becomes the bank's property and bank's debt to you at the same time.
